What is the cancellation policy?

If you miss a class:

  • We’ll check in with you via email or text.

  • You can reschedule or request a refund.

  • Refunds can be issued to your card or by check.

Class Details & Requirements

What’s the difference between the 5-hour and 1-hour class?

If you hold both Plumbing and HVACR licenses and previously completed 5 hours of Plumbing Continuing Education (CE), you only need 1.5 hours of CE for your HVACR license this time.

How many people are in a class?

Class sizes range from 30 to 50 people, depending on the venue.

Do I need a computer for online classes?

Yes, online classes require a laptop, computer, or tablet with a webcam. We need to see and hear each other.

What should I have for an online class?

  • You’ll receive an electronic copy of the class material 2 days before your class, sent to your email. There’s no need to print it, as the instructor will display and review the material during class.

  • The Zoom link will be in your confirmation email when you sign up for class, as well as in the reminder email sent the day before. To find it quickly, just go to your email search box and type “Scott’s Training.”

What are the rules for online classes?

  • No virtual or blurred backgrounds.

  • No driving during class.

  • Remain seated upright—no lounging or lying down.

  • No multitasking of any kind.

  • Active participation is required in breakout rooms.

Continuing Education & License Renewal

When do I need to complete my CE for Plumbing?

New Jersey Plumbing licensees must complete 5 hours of CE before June 30th of odd-numbered years.

When do I need to complete my CE for HVACR?

New Jersey HVACR licensees must complete 5 hours of CE before June 30th of even-numbered years.

Classes start in September, both online and in person.

HVACR Licensing & BFR Information

What should I know about being an HVACR Bona Fide Representative (BFR)?

  • Becoming a BFR: You can become a BFR at any time. Just inform the Board within 30 days—no prior approval needed.

  • Liability Insurance: If you’re not a BFR, you don’t need liability insurance.

  • Shelving/Parking Your License: Switching to Inactive is free—no surety bond, no renewal fee, no CE required.

  • Reactivating Your License: Takes 3–6 months and requires CE completion.

  • Resigning as a BFR: If you step down, notify the Board that your company is not performing HVACR work to ensure a smooth return later.

Apprenticeships & Getting Licensed

How do I get a NJ Master HVACR or Plumbing License?

  • 1. Complete a 5-Year DOL-Approved Apprenticeship Program

    • Enroll in a Department of Labor (DOL) approved apprenticeship program.

    • Complete 144 classroom hours per year for 4 years.

    • Work one additional year as a Journeyperson.

    • All work must be done under the supervision of a Licensed Plumbing or HVACR Contractor.

    👉 After this stage, you’re eligible to apply for the state licensing exam.

    2. Apply for the Licensing Exam

    Submit your application to the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs – Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers or HVACR Contractors with proof of:

    • Completed apprenticeship hours

    • Journeyperson experience

    • Any required fees and documentation

    3. Pass the State Licensing Exam

    4. Obtain Your License

    Once you pass both sections of the HVACR exam—or all three sections of the Plumbing exam—you’ll pay the licensing fee and be issued your Master HVACR or Plumbing License.

How can I pass the NJ HVACR or Plumbing exam?

The key is time management—you have 2.5 minutes per question. We train you to find answers in 30 seconds or less for open-book questions.

How do your exam prep classes work?

Live Online Sessions

  • Four 2.5-hour sessions on Tuesday nights.

  • Learn time-saving strategies and review key topics.

Online Quizzes & Highlighting

  • Take online quizzes to get familiar with the test materials.

In-Person Saturday Review Class

  • Final session: Saturday, 8 AM – 2 PM.

What is the NJ HVACR Exam Like?

The New Jersey HVACR (Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration) licensing exam has two parts: Trade (Technical) and Business & Law.

Trade (Technical) Exam

  • Number of Questions: 50

  • Time Limit: 130 minutes

  • Format: Open book

  • Topics Covered Include:

    • HVACR systems (installation, repair, maintenance)

    • Refrigeration, electrical, motors, controls

    • Fuel gas, combustion, vent systems

    • Load calculations, piping, theory

Business & Law Exam

  • Number of Questions: 50

  • Time Limit: 130 minutes

  • Format: Open book

  • Topics Covered Include:

    • Business organization, licensing & contracts

    • Estimating, bidding, project & risk management

    • Safety, labor law, financial & tax law, lien law

What is the NJ Plumbing exam like?

The exam consists of three parts: Trade, Practical, and Business & Law. Each section has specific questions and time limits.

Trade Exam

  • Total Questions: 100

  • Time Limit: 195 minutes

  • Format: Open book

  • Topics Include:

    • General knowledge

    • Materials, uses, and specifications

    • Traps, interceptors, and backflow prevention

    • Plumbing fixtures, fixture fittings, and plumbing appliances

    • Water supply systems

    • Drains and waste (including indirect waste and roof drain piping)

    • Specialty plumbing

Practical Exam
