HVACR License Exam Prep Course

Becoming a Licensed Master HVACR Contractor is a major achievement. While self-study is possible, an Exam Prep Class can simplify the process and improve your chances of success.

HVACR License Exam Overview

The New Jersey HVACR License Exam is administered by PSI Exams on behalf of the NJ State Board of Examiners of Master HVACR. It includes two parts, outlined below.

The bulletin includes everything you need to prepare: exam structure, topics covered, scheduling details, and the currently accepted editions of the codebooks. Be sure to review it a few weeks before your class begins to ensure you're using the correct materials.

HVACR License Exam Breakdown

The HVACR License Exam consists of two parts:

PART 1

Trade Knowledge Examination:

  • This section assesses your understanding of HVACR systems, including installation, maintenance, and repair practices.

  • Number of Questions: 50 multiple-choice questions​

  • Time Allotted: 130 minutes​

  • Passing Score: 70%

PART 2

Business and Law Examination:

  • This portion evaluates your knowledge of business management, state laws, and regulations pertinent to HVACR contracting in NJ.

  • Number of Questions: 50 multiple-choice questions​

  • Time Allotted: 130 minutes​

  • Passing Score: 70%

Required Books for the HVACR License Exam

You must bring the following books to the exam:

  1. 2021 International Mechanical Code

  2. 2021 International Fuel Gas Code

  3. ACCA Manual J

  4. NASCLA Contractors Guide to Business, Law, and Project Management (New Jersey 1st Edition)

You may highlight and tab the books permanently, but writing in them is not allowed.

  • June 3 – Business & Law (6:30 - 9:00 PM)

  • June 8 – Class Review (8:00 AM - 3:00 PM)
