Plumbing License Exam Prep Course

Becoming a Licensed Master Plumber is a major achievement. While self-study is possible, an Exam Prep Class can simplify the process and improve your chances of success.

Plumbing License Exam Overview

The New Jersey Plumbing License Exam is administered by PSI Exams on behalf of the NJ State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers. It includes three parts, outlined below.

👉 Click here to download the Candidate Bulletin on the PSI Exams website.

The bulletin includes everything you need to prepare: exam structure, topics covered, scheduling details, and the currently accepted editions of the codebooks. Be sure to review it a few weeks before your class begins to ensure you're using the correct materials.

Exam Breakdown

Part 1

Trade Exam

Focus on the NSPC codebook, with some questions on trenching

100 questions in 190 minutes

Part 2

Practical (Drawings)

Includes questions on sizing and DFUs for DWV systems and roof drains, along with rolling offsets, parallel piping, and developed length

25 questions in 100 minutes

Part 3

Business and Law

Based on the NASCLA Business, Law, and Project Management Guide

50 questions in 130 minutes

Required Books for the Plumbing License Exam:

You can purchase all the books listed in the reference materials, but the two you must buy—because you're allowed to bring them into the exam—are:

  • NSPC 2018

  • NASCLA Contractors Guide NJ, 1st Edition

That said, I recommend holding off on buying the 2018 NSPC for now. The 2021 version has already been approved, and PSI Exams may update the test accordingly. To be safe, check the Candidate Bulletin about a month before your class starts to confirm which version will be required.

You may highlight and tab the books permanently, but writing in them is not allowed.
