Plumbing License Exam Overview
The New Jersey Plumbing License Exam is administered by PSI Exams on behalf of the NJ State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers. It includes three parts, outlined below.

The bulletin includes everything you need to prepare: exam structure, topics covered, scheduling details, and the currently accepted editions of the codebooks. Be sure to review it a few weeks before your class begins to ensure you're using the correct materials.
Exam Breakdown
Part 1
Trade Exam
Focus on the NSPC codebook, with some questions on trenching
100 questions in 190 minutes
Part 2
Practical (Drawings)
Sizing and DFUs for DWV systems, roof drains, rolling offsets, parallel piping, and developed length
25 questions in 100 minutes
Part 3
Business and Law
Based on the NASCLA Business, Law, and Project Management Guide
50 questions in 130 minutes
📘 Required Books for the Plumbing License Exam
The following two codebooks are permitted reference materials during the exam and are essential for your preparation:
⚠️ IMPORTANT - Before You Purchase:
The currently accepted NSPC edition is the 2018 version. However, the 2021 version has been approved and PSI Exams may begin using it for upcoming test dates.
✓ Action Required: Check the PSI Candidate Bulletin 3-4 weeks before your class begins to confirm which NSPC edition will be accepted for your exam date.
